Move proves fruitful for Camilleri family

AFTER nearly 50 years in operation, there is no longer a fresh fruit and vegetable shop at the Hay Point turnoff on the Bruce Hwy.

The Camilleri family have had their business, Camilleri's Fresh Fruit, at the location for nearly 10 years but a Main Roads decision forced them to shut up shop and move out.

Instead of giving up, the family packed up their business and moved just a few minutes north, to Mac's Truck Stop.

Brian Camilleri said it was a bittersweet move but not all bad.

"It was (sad) because it was sort of an end of an era," he said.

"We have been in that shop operating our business since May 2006.

"It was sad to leave but progress comes along and we all move on."

Now in the new location, Mr Camilleri said the permanent shop would hopefully be built by the end of the year but the temporary shop stocked the same as they had in the old shop.

"We're up and running again, Debbie's Seafood comes out on a Friday," he said.

"The new one is air-conditioned so it's a bit more comfortable."

Mr Camilleri said he had big plans for the new shop, but for now their priority was to get the approvals to start building and move into their new permanent home.

Mac's Truck Stop is 21km south of Mackay city centre.
