Mountain bikers on track in successful start

SIXTY-EIGHT mountain bike riders took on the challenging course at the Gladstone MTB Inaugural XCO Race on Sunday.

While Matt Jenkin (pictured) pushed through the pain barrier in humid conditions, it was his sidekick Dane Linforth who took out the Elite category.

He finished ahead of Sean Hall and Anthony Oakeshott.

Justin Mahoney upstaged Austin Allen and Sandy McVey to top the Sport Class list.

Other winners were Jodi Newton (Ladies), Jamie Robertson in Masters, Scott Hansen in Novice and Lachlan Porteous in Juniors.

Organiser Joel Scherer said yesterday's event attracted some surprises while there were no major casualties other than the odd flat tire and minor mechanical issues.

"The response has been fantastic and the riders have exceeded all expectations," Scherer said.

"There were also more spectators than what was expected."

The XCO Race had five different categories; elite, masters and sport, ladies, novice and juniors.
