Woman rushed to hospital after stingray attack

A WOMAN has been taken to Palmerston Hospital after she was stung in the knee by a stingray last night.

The 45-year-old woman was rushed to hospital from her Moulden home at 7pm.

It is unclear how or when the woman was in the ocean, according to St John Ambulance.

With the venom of a stingray posing a deadly threat to swimmers, St John Ambulance NT emergency duty manager Robert Webster said it was critical to call emergency services immediately after an attack.

"Using their barbs for self-defence, the venom produced by stingrays can be fatal to humans," Mr Webster said.

"Please seek urgent medical care and contact the St John Triple Zero call centre for assistance."

Mr Webster said the recommended first-aid treatment for wounds inflicted by stingray barbs was to immerse the affected area into hot water - as hot as can be tolerated.

"This reduces the pain caused by the poison and simultaneously neutralises its effects," Mr Webster said.

In February last year a Darwin fisherman stung while crabbing at Gunn Point was forced to wait 40 hours at Royal Darwin Hospital with a stingray barb embedded in his foot because of a lack of hospital staff.

In August last year a man in his seventies was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital after being stung on his wrist by a stingray at Stokes Hill Wharf in Darwin.

And in May 2017 a man in his late forties needed urgent medical attention after he was speared by a stingray while fishing in East Arnhem Land.
