Mo's little fillies pin their hopes on 'gorgeous' chestnut

FOUR Gladstone women have high stakes in today's Gladstone Turf Club Melbourne Cup race day.

While plenty of people will be holding their breath as the race that stops a nation plays out, Trisha Collins, Sharon Thomsen, Elena Long and Karin Simon will be intensely focused on the debut of their horse, Staked Emotion.

Collins described the five-year-old chestnut gelding as gorgeous.

"He is huge," Collins said. "We call him Mo and we are Mo's little fillies."

She said buying the horse was just a bit of fun since none of them except Thomsen had any experience with horse racing.

Thomsen travelled to Magic Millions to purchase Staked Emotion, which she said the girls decided to do because their husbands were in a syndicate together.

They floated him back to Gladstone in July and he has been with trainer Lee Kiernan since.

Thomsen said the gelding had had seven starts in Brisbane before she bought him.

He had posted one win, two seconds and a third, so the women were hopeful he would race well today.

She said it would be a tough race for him, but they would be happy no matter the outcome.

"We just want to see him on the track."

But Thomsen said she had high hopes for his future.

"We are hoping he will be good enough to go to Rockhampton," she said.

"We want to take him back to Brisbane, but that is a long way down the track."

Jockey Carly-Mae Pye will ride Staked Emotion on his debut at the Gladstone Turf Club today.
