More pain for flooded Forbes as central NSW swamped

IT COULD be days before about 1000 Forbes residents return home after floodwater washed through the town in the New South Wales Central West.

Authorities are warning more pain is on the way.

The Lachlan River hit 10.67m on Sunday night after 17mm of rain fell in the region on Saturday.

Rain has been falling in the area since August 30.

The State Emergency Service said it expected sewage and power problems across Forbes and that 1000 residents would be temporarily homeless after 100 properties were swamped.

The Bureau of Meteorology says another Lachlan River peak next week will mean even more hardship for the region.

"The situation at Forbes is continuing - the river is still rising, albeit slowly,” SES spokeswoman Sue Pritchard told the Nine Network.

Ms Pritchard said the NSW SES had answered 2343 calls for assistance and completed 96 rescues in the past three weeks.
