PATIENTS should be travelling to Rockhampton less often for treatment with more specialists coming to Gladstone Medical Centre.

Rockhampton-based orthopaedic surgeon Dr Rishi Kaushal - who held the first of new fortnightly visits to Gladstone on Saturday - said 30% of all patients he sees in the public system are from Gladstone.

"It's not easy for older patients to travel and although they will still need to have the surgery in Rockhampton, now they can at least have an initial consult and appointments afterwards in Gladstone," Dr Kaushal said.

Since Dr Avinder Joshi took over the centre four months ago he has already brought a range of specialist services to Gladstone. Patients can see a psychologist, podiatrist, physiologist, sonographer, and a dietician and diabetic educator - none of which are available at Gladstone Hospital except the dietician and diabetic educator.

Dr Joshi is determined to do more, including opening on Sundays and after hours, to help with the "service gap" in Gladstone and "alleviate pressure on the public health system".
