More accolades for coach Ray Cooper

BASKETBALL: Highly-respected McDonalds Gladstone Port City Power women's coach Ray Cooper has been appointed as coach of the under-18 Queensland North boys team ahead of the 2017-18 representative season.

Cooper, who took the Power to fourth spot on the QBL women's ladder, has been involved as an assistant coach on an Emerging Tour back in 2014 and has been an assistant coach of the U18 Queensland North program for the past two years.

His new appointment has been announced this morning.

"I put my name in to get the job and it's a bit of progress to continue to develop myself as a coach,” Cooper said.

"I am very excited to have been given this opportunity from Basketball Queensland and am honoured to be representing the Queensland North program as a state team head coach.

"I am looking forward to working with this group of talented athletes and see it as an opportunity to impact their development, both on and off the court.”

The Queensland North team will compete at the Australian Junior Championship tournament in Geelong in April and Cooper added the team will be selected after the state championships in November.

Cooper and newly-appointed Power men's coach Brady Walmsley fly out to the US on Saturday to take part in a coaches study tour.

"It's to broaden my ideas of coaching and what the other colleges do,” Cooper said.

"Hopefully I'll come away with some good ideas.”
