Mood sombre as divers search for missing man

CAMPERS at Notch Point are staying out of the water as police divers search the ocean floor for fisherman Neville Ohl, 69, who went missing after launching his boat at the site on Tuesday.

Clearly shaken, Wayne Ohl assisted SES and police in the search for his beloved father.

Wayne Ohl wasn't able to make a comment yesterday, aside from saying "chances are looking grim".

Holidaymakers who had set up camp a few hundred metres from where Mr Ohl vanished, described the mood as sombre.

"It's strange, it's such a quiet place," Mackay man David Ellul said.

"I just want to stay out of the water and let the professionals do the work."

It has been more than three days since Mr Ohl vanished.

Mr Ellul, his wife and father in-law arrived at the popular camping site, more than 45km south-east of Sarina, on Wednesday afternoon.

"I find the crocodile theory hard to believe," he said.

"I have been coming here for many years and never seen a crocodile.

"It's a tragedy. I hope it doesn't happen again."

No crocodiles were found at the site when the SES and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service conducted a survey on Thursday.

Mackay deputy mayor Kevin Casey and his wife Tricia Casey were hoping for a relaxing weekend when they took some time off to camp at Notch Point.

"We normally go swimming but I haven't been yet. I must admit I don't know whether I'd be going in," Mr Casey said.

"I would never let my kids swim in here. There could easily be a crocodile around."
