Monash University student listed on AirAsia flight

MELBOURNE'S Monash University says it will be offering counselling to students after reports one of its students was a passenger on missing AirAsia flight QZ8501.

The university said they were trying to confirm media reports passenger Kevin Alexander Soetjipto, who is listed on the flight's manifest, was studying at a campus in Melbourne.

Cindy Clarissa Soetjipto, who is listed as his sister on Facebook, is recorded on the manifest as sitting in seat 6C on the flight. Another person with the same surname, Rudy, was sitting in between the two in 6B, Fairfax reported.

"Monash University is currently endeavouring to confirm with authorities that one of our students was aboard flight QZ8501, however we do understand that Kevin Alexander Soetjipto is listed on the flight manifest following media enquiries," the university said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened to learn this news in relation to one of our valued student community. We will be offering counselling support to Kevin's friends and fellow classmates.

"We offer our sincere thoughts and prayers to all of the families of those onboard the flight."
