Mission floats new life into sunken yacht

THE saga of the Torres Herald is over. The yacht was refloated on Sunday by the Gladstone salvage company Space Marine.

The historic vessel sunk at its moorings in the Calliope River late last month.

Its Victorian owners, who had not yet stepped aboard, made a public appeal for help to refloat the vessel.

Salvager Danny Aeschlimann said he dived underneath and used airbags to refloat the vessel.

Mr Aeschlimann, who has been refloating vessels for 43 years, said it was one of his easier operations.

"It was only submerged about three or four metres from the top deck, which was a lot easier than others which have been at 30 or 40 metres," he said.

Once the Torres Herald was refloated, it was towed by Volunteer Marine Rescue to the Gladstone Marina.

A bridle was put around the front of the vessel and it was towed to the mouth of the creek yesterday.

It was then tied to the VMR boat, a 9.8m Kevlacat with 600hp, and brought to the marina.

"It was a good training exercise for us," VMR controller Greg Sharp said.

"We were able to help them out a bit and also train up some of our new members," he said.
