Miriam Vale on edge to host Intrust Super Cup trial match

FOOTY fever is about to hit Miriam Vale this weekend, with the biggest sporting event the town has ever hosted to get under way on Saturday afternoon.

Gary Larson Oval will act as the Colosseum, with the Central Queensland Capras to take on the newly renamed Sunshine Coast Falcons in an Intrust Super Cup trial match, a much-needed hit-out for the locals, after the wild weather cancelled their trial against Mackay last weekend.

While only a pre-season trial, Capras operations manager Walson Carlos said the Capras would be eager to get a win over the Falcons (formerly Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles), who finished two places below the Capras on the ladder last season, in front of what should be a rambunctious Miriam Vale crowd.

"Because the Mackay trial was cancelled I imagine it'll be a fairly strong side we take down on the weekend," Carlos said.

With a squad of about 40, Carlos said the pre-season had been a success so far, with head coach Jason Hetherington having the benefit of a full pre-season with his troops as well as heavy involvement alongside Carlos in the recruitment strategy for the Capras' 2014 campaign.

"It's been really good for Jason (Hetherington), he's had a full pre-season with the boys and has been actively involved in recruitment with myself. He's pretty excited about the depth in the squad," he said.

The game should prove to be a spectacle for the fans, with the Falcons recently appointing ex-Broncos head coach Ivan Henjak as coach this season, as well as a reshuffle in club management and some astute recruiting from Brisbane-based, opposition clubs, meaning last season's wooden spooners may prove much stiffer competition.

While the electrifying Brent Crisp will be missing with injury, Carlos said a number of Gladstone locals, products of Capras' Gladstone training squad, should get the chance to prove their worth to the coach as they vied for a regular berth in the Capras' Intrust Super Cup side.

"The Gladstone training squad has been a raging success, there's some good players down in Gladstone, guys like Matt Mizzi and the likes will be really pushing for a spot," Carlos said.
