Merv Hughes booted out of the South African bush

MERV Hughes was the surprise elimination from I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! last night.

The cricket legend is the seventh person sent home from the reality show, filmed in South Africa.

The 53-year-old was the patriarch of base camp, although he often stirred the pot to entertain himself.

"It's been a great experience and great learning curve and just being more tolerant of those around," Hughes said.

"I think that's going to help me at home."

He faced his fear of snakes in the "Bad Hair Day" tucker trial, which saw him put his head in a box of slithering reptiles.

Intruders Julie Goodwin and Anna Heinrich were tipped to be eliminated before Hughes.

Chrissie Swan is still the favourite to win the show's grand final on Sunday, according to SportsBet.

Either Goodwin or comedian Joel Creasey look likely to be eliminated tonight.
