Men's softball to hit-off summer comp

SOFTBALL: Men's softball will be hitting off tonight and making a welcome return to Warren Dinte Diamond at Memorial Park.

There will be a call of "batter up" and "play ball" by the plate umpire at 6.30pm to start the first innings of the game.

The two teams lining up will be the Blue Jays captained by Jordan Ludkin and Red Sox captained by Nigel Jones.

Jones played with Canada last year in the Softball World Masters, winning a bronze medal.

"Ultimately we are looking for a competition to give the younger players a game to play and get some of the older boys off their backsides and get out here playing again," Jones said.

"Numbers are looking good and next year we are going to try for a four-team competition.

"We want to breed a professional format for the younger players coming through and any former players to come down and have a go."

There will be familiar names coming back to play in the competition with Richard Hodowaniec and Terry Jenkinson back in the line up.

The teams won't be short of experience with under-19 Queensland captain Mike Ludkin lining up to play tonight.

Ludkin was part of the stateunder-19 team that won the Australian title and was vice-captain of Aussie Junior Steelers, that won the world championship.

Men's competition co-ordinator Joe Ludkin said it was good to break out the bats, gloves and softballs and have a hit and a throw.

"We have a good mix of playing ability in the competition and it's great there are both boys and men in friendly, yet competitive games," Mr Ludkin said.
