Memorial service for eight dead Manoora children

EIGHT children whose bodies were discovered in a Cairns home a week before Christmas will be laid to rest today.

A traditional Torres Strait Islander ceremony will be held for the children at the Cairns Convention Centre at 10am.

Organisers named it the Keriba Omasker Memorial Service, which means "our children" in the Meriam Mir, Erub dialect, a language of the eight children's heritage.

The ceremony is expected to attract more than 3000 mourners.

The children, aged between two and 14, were found dead on December 19 last year in a home on Murray St in the Cairns suburb of Manoora.

The crime made headlines across the world and resulted in an outpouring of grief across the nation.

The home where the children died will be demolished and a permanent memorial built at the site in consultation with the family, elders and the community.

Raina Mersane Ina Thaiday, 37, mother of seven of the children and aunt to the eighth, has been charged with eight counts of murder over the incident.

Ms Thaiday is expected to appear in court again on January 30.
