Residents call on council to fix memorial for loved ones

THE LOVED ones of those taken by suicide have called on Gladstone Regional Council to erect a permanent memorial fixture.

The call comes after Uniting Care said it was providing a temporary display board to pin the names and ages of those lost to suicide during a World Suicide Prevention Day ceremony.

Michaelle Luijs, who lost her son Kevin to suicide last year, said it would help survivors if a permanent fixture was erected.

Gladstone Regional Council Mayor Gail Sellers said while the temporary fixture would have to be removed, she welcomed the idea of something more permanent.

"It definitely wouldn't be outside Gladstone Regional Council (Chambers), but maybe somewhere like a park," Cr Sellers said.

Cr Sellers said a row of trees had been previously been planted at Barney Point to commemorate those affected by domestic violence.

Each year Lifeline encourages community groups to participate in their Out of the Shadows, Into the Light walk to raise awareness of suicide prevention campaigns.

This year Uniting Care Gladstone has organised a memorial day outside Gladstone Regional Council to commemorate those who have taken their own lives.

"We need to get the awareness out there and have a memorial for our loved ones," Ms Luijs said.

Gladstone's World Suicide Prevention Day ceremony will be held on September 10 outside Gladstone Regional Council chambers at 10am.
