Memorial race to honour jockey touches Coles family

CAMERON Cole's family has spent countless days at Ferguson Park over the years, but the few hours they were there on the weekend were some of the most special.

After Cameron, a former premiership jockey, died earlier this year, Gladstone Turf Club named a race on Saturday after him.

The family turned up to watch it and was impressed with the day's events.

"It is awesome, absolutely terrific," Cameron's brother Paul said.

"People are remembering Cameron in a great way," he said.

Cameron's father Jim, a former trainer, was also there to watch.

Jim said he was proud of the day and what his son had left behind, also relishing the chance to relive some memories of his son with other stalwarts of the racing scene in Gladstone.

"The starter Bobby Lisle rode with Cameron, he is still here," he said.

"It has been a wonderful day and I am glad the weather kept fine."

Scott Sheargold won the Cameron Cole Memorial on Leaps And Bounds by five lengths, in a brilliant ride.

Both Paul and Jim said they were impressed and

Cameron would have had been suitably impressed by the jockey's well judged ride.

His wife Deb believed the day was timed perfectly, because of it being the day after Good Friday.

"After every race he won he would feast on seafood," she said.
