Meeting Broncos idol the perfect present for fan

THE perfect birthday present for nine-year-old Gypsy Gavins was meeting her NRL idol, Jharah Yow Yeh.

In Gladstone on the weekend meeting his youngest and biggest fans, Yow Yeh did not disappoint, instilling words of wisdom into young players.

Calloum Birse-Syphers was rapt to have the opportunity to have his Broncos memorabilia signed by the former player.

"He is the best football player in the world," he said.

"He just scores try after try. I play for the Wallabies now, I hope to be like him when I get older."

After sustaining a series of serious leg injuries and ensuing complications, Yow Yeh hung his NRL hat up in March 2014.

He is now adjusting to life as an ambassador, motivational speaker and university student.

"Over the past two years, there have been a lot of learning curves for me," he said.

"Now I'm focusing on completing my business degree and starting my own business.

"As I get older and wiser, I'd like to give back to the community a little more and maybe get into coaching."

Yow Yeh was pleasantly surprised at the small town friendliness abundant in Gladstone.

"Everyone is really polite and friendly in Gladstone," he said.

"I've been to Gladstone a fair few times. I'm a quiet town boy, I can't wait to meet some more people today."

A metal plate and four bolts may have interrupted Yow Yeh's premier grade football career, but he believes it has enhanced his ability to relate to audiences during motivational speaking.

He says he will continue in his ambassador roles for as long as he can, for both Deadly Choices and the Arthur Beetson program as an indigenous mentor.
