THIS week we have a coffee with Pat Fordyce, Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun general manager operations.

Name: Pat Fordyce

Occupation: Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun general manager operations

Years lived in Gladstone: 11

What you love about where you live: It's 10 minutes from home and I've got the boat in the water.

How do you take your favourite drink? Red wine is my preferred drink.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon you can find me…at the cricket. My son plays for Yaralla A-Grade, and I go along and watch.

When I was young, my dream was to….play test cricket for Australia. I got to represent Darling Downs in south-west Queensland at a schoolboy level, but my son can score lots and take the wickets.

My most memorable pet is…a goose. It wakes me up at 5am every morning. We had two but one disappeared. I hope she wasn't the one that lays golden eggs!

My secret talent is…I used to write software. I designed one that went into abattoirs, and plants like these. It's very different these days though.

When I feel like splurging, I…buy things. I bought myself a tractor two years ago. I'm on four acres (1.6ha) so there's lots of work around the home for a small tractor.

I bought my daughters and myself a new car. The girls got what they were given.

My criteria was something with a lot of airbags. They're borrowing it while at Townsville for university.

My favourite holiday destination is…Fraser Island - it's a beautiful spot to go camping and fishing - or the Whitsundays; just getting on a yacht and travelling the islands.

I've done it four times. We did it for our honeymoon. It's very relaxing.
