McVeigh's media adviser rumoured to run for Gregory

A FORMER ABC rural reporter is believed to have put his hand up to replace Vaughan Johnson as Gregory MP.

Lachlan Millar, currently a media adviser to agriculture minister John McVeigh, is understood to be one of the LNP's Gregory preselection nominees.

Mr Millar yesterday would not confirm nor deny his rumoured candidacy to APN.

He said all questions regarding preselection should be taken to LNP head office - who in turn said a statement regarding Gregory would be released in coming days.

While Mr Millar currently lives on the Sunshine Coast, where he ran for local government in 2008, he grew up in Emerald where his family owns a cotton property.

Mr Millar worked for nine years as an ABC rural reporter, starting in Longreach, before becoming a media advisor to the former-Maroochy council and the LNP.

Mr Johnson, the government whip, announced earlier this month he was retiring from politics to make way for a younger candidate.

He was first elected in 1989 and served as the Transport Minister in the Borbidge Government from 1996-1998.

Despite being one of the most experienced LNP MPs he was not given a ministry in the first term of the Newman government.

Mr Johnson received 59% of the primary vote at the 2012 election.
