MCG goes green to save energy

AUSTRALIA'S legendary sporting ground has launched an initiative that will generate enough energy savings to power 835 houses annually.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground, in conjunction with Siemens, has embarked on an $8 million upgrade to the ground's light towers in a bid to make the ground more environmentally friendly.

Along with replacing the existing lighting systems with low-energy lighting technologies, the ground's management will install a new building management system, implement changes to heating and ventilation systems and install new chilled water systems and modernised room control systems.

Melbourne Cricket Club chief executive officer Stephen Gough said on Wednesday the organisation took the issue of sustainability seriously.

He said the new measures would run the MCG light towers for 5.75 years, cut carbon emissions by 19% and the carbon saved each year would fill the MCG 10.92 times.
