Mayoral race heats up

DEPUTY mayor Matt Burnett is odds-on favourite to take over the council chambers according to betting company Sportsbet.

Sportsbet's full-time politics trader turned his gaze to the Gladstone mayoral race yesterday, after The Observer asked him to, and he predicted Matt Burnett was the most likely winner.

After looking at past trends, news events and activity on candidate's social media pages he framed the field with Cr Burnett at $1.60, Mayor Gail Sellers at $2.50 and Michelle Wagner at $11.

For those who don't bet, Sportsbet spokesman Ben Bulmer broke down the numbers.

"The race for the Gladstone mayor looks to be a race between two, Matt Burnett and current Mayor Gail Sellers," he said.

"Gail Sellers got across the line by just 300 votes in 2012 and after a challenging four years in the top job will have her work cut out to win again.

"Matt Burnett is the odds-on favourite with Sportsbet, having run a solid campaign and dominating his rivals on social media.

"Michelle Wagner is the roughie and will need to drastically up her profile for the remainder of the campaign if she is to stand a chance."

Cr Burnett said it was a good position to be in but there were still four days to go.

"I've worked very hard for our community for 16 years and it's encouraging to think the people at Sportsbet think I will win," he said.

"It's still very close though and certainly not over."

Cr Sellers didn't know what to make of the 90c difference between her and her deputy mayor after the two had their last council meeting together yesterday.

Cr Sellers said she wasn't a gambler so she couldn't quite tell if it meant Sportsbet had him miles in front or just a nose.

"I won last time by 300 and like a close race," she said.

"I hope to edge out the others by a nose."

Ms Wagner said from her experience doing track work years ago her odds were pretty good.

"You should back me, put a thousand on the nose," she said.

"If you are lucky enough to have a bit of money why not go for it?"

"I don't know how they work it out, but it's all a bit of fun."
