GLENN Maxwell said he had doubted he had the ability to succeed at the highest level before his extraordinary knock of 145 not out helped Australia to an 85-run win over Sri Lanka in Pallekele.

Maxwell's innings took the Aussies to a record-breaking 3-263, the highest T20 international score, beating the Sri Lankans' 6-260 against Kenya at the 2007 World Cup in Johannesburg.

The Victorian played no part in the tourists' 4-1 One-Day International success and was only in this first T20 team because regular opener Aaron Finch broke his finger in the final ODI clash.

But promoted to open alongside skipper David Warner, Maxwell smashed his way to his unbeaten 145 off 65 balls.

Maxwell's 145 came off 65 balls and contained 14 fours and nine sixes, including a number of trademark switch hits and slog reverse sweeps.

Only Finch's 156 against England is ahead of Maxwell on the list of top international T20 scores, but Maxwell said he did not think he might get the chance to do it for his country again.

"I've been out of the one-day team for a while now, so to get my first crack back in the main team and to do as well as I did today was brilliant," Maxwell said.

"I had doubted a fair bit about my ability at this level and to come out and strike the ball like I did today was really pleasing.

"And to have a team score like that is also really pleasing."

Finch and Maxwell used to share a house, so Maxwell said there was extra motivation to chase down his mate's top T20 score.

The "Big Show", as Maxwell has been nicknamed, was, however, happy to allow teammate Travis Head some of the glory as Australia racked up its record score.

"Of course I knew what it was," Maxwell said when asked if he was aware that he was close to chasing dwon Finch's mark.

"I used to live with him so I knew exactly what it was.

"And he kept telling me at every drinks break, so I was well aware of it and he kept on saying that I was going to beat it.

"Then Heady started smacking them out of the park so I didn't even get a chance.

"It was perfect."
