Mackay's Mater Hospital evacuated due to fire

AN UNKNOWN number of people have been evacuated from the Mater Hospital due to a fire.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said six fire crews attended the Willets Rd address after a call was received at 8.59 tonight after an alarm activation.

On arrival firefighters found smoke on level three of the hospital, the spokeswoman said.

The fire was extinguished at 9.55pm, she said.

There were evacuations as a result of the fire, she said.

It is believed some patients have been transported to Mackay Base Hospital.

Six patients from Mater will be transferred to Mackay Base Hospital, which is on standby to receive more if required.

Crews left the scene by 12.30pm, a QFES spokesman said this morning.
