Maroons skipper backs Slater for Origin start

MAROONS captain Cameron Smith has backed fullback Billy Slater to overcome an ankle injury and play in Wednesday's State of Origin decider.

Slater sent a scare through the Maroons camp on Sunday when he went down with an ankle injury in training.

The 28-Origin veteran was driven from the field for treatment and has just two days recover for the Suncorp Stadium decider.

Slater could sit out Tuesday's final training run to ensure he does not aggravate the injury.

"He's all right. I saw him this morning and he was walking around,” Smith said on Monday.

"He told me he's done a few hops on his foot.

"I think he will be right to play.

"I'm not a doctor but he looked pretty good to me.

"I think he will be a starter.”

The Maroons are yet to draft in any extra players to cover Slater.

If he is ruled out, debutant Cameron Munster would likely shift to fullback, allowing Ben Hunt to start at five-eighth and Andrew McCullough to take the utility role on the bench.

McCullough has been in Camp Maroon since Thursday as a development player.
