Mariners’ young guns show talent in tussle

IT was all about player development for the young CQ Mariners players on Saturday.

A crowd of family and friends watched on as the Gladstone and Rockhampton under-12 teams played a training match.

Prior to Christmas, the teams have gathered twice a week for training and now they will meet three times every week to prepare for the upcoming football season.

CQ Mariners Gladstone coach and technical director Gordon Macdonald said the game was not for a purpose of one team winning, another losing.

"Today is about player development and I think we were successful in achieving that focus," Macdonald said.

Both teams were tasked to put their training to practice - in particular playing out from the back and midfield.

The Gladstone team has 14 players, all that have played football since they were 5-7 years old.

Tana Martin, 10, was keen to hit the field with his team mates on Saturday.

He has played soccer for six years.

"Today I was playing right midfield," he said. "I like scoring goals and learning new skills.

"I scored one goal today - it's exciting, it makes me feel happy."
