Marina bridge closed to road traffic Tuesday morning

GLADSTONE'S Marina Bridge will remain closed to marine traffic until further notice and will be closed to road traffic for a couple of hours from 7.30am on Tuesday.

Gladstone Regional Council raised the bridge once on Monday to give some vessels passage underneath, but the bridge didn't perform as expected.

"This is not the outcome we were hoping for, but we have to consider safety for all and prevent further damage from occurring," a spokeswoman said.

The bridge was closed to marine traffic last week after an urgent bridge assessment revealed that an issue with the hydraulic mechanism would require further investigation.

Gladstone Mayor Gail Sellers said the concern was with the slow raising of the bascule bridge and associated noise.

"Until further notice, the bridge will not be raised for tall vessels, as there is a great risk that further damage could be incurred if bridge lifting operations continue," she said.
