"Green wave" starts at MardiGrass, sweeps the world

ONE of the Rainbow Region's signature events and major earners, the Nimbin MardiGrass, has been chopped, rolled,. smoked and stubbed out for another year, amid the overwhelmingly sweet aroma of - money.

The inaugural event 22 years ago was a march to the local police station in protest at the treatment of Nimbin's pot smokers, and little has changed.

Organisers yesterday pointed to the progress of global decriminalisation and legalisation , telling the crowd "You're all on the crest of a green wave around the world."

Judging by the number of overseas and interstate visitors, MardiGrass is definitely an international attraction, with more than 2500 lining the streets.

Fashion was typically rainbow as serapes mingled with surfwear, designer jackets with homespun wool and dreadlocks with polished scalps.

And there were myriad ways to part with money. .

Got the munchies? Here the lamb lies down with the felafel and the hot dog as the aromas mingle with the smoke. And when it was all over, the Kombi lined up with the Lexus to head homewards.
