Club fight caused by man throwing money at women

OVER-reacting to another pub patron's poor behaviour has left a 24-year-old man with a hefty fine.

Simon David Maddern had been drinking with friends at the Bernborough Tavern in Oakey on the night of March 5, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

His girlfriend and another woman were dancing when a man unknown to them passed derogatory remarks to them and then threw money at the two women.

After seeing this, Maddern had approached the man and they had engaged in an altercation during which the 24-year-old punched the other man twice to the face, knocking him to the floor.

The complainant man got to his feet with a bloody nose, police prosecutor Sergeant Tim Hutton told the court.

Maddern pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm, his solicitor Nathan Bouchier telling the court the incident was very much out of character for his client who had been drunk on the night.

Mr Bouchier said there had been some provocation by the complainant man but his client accepted his response to that had been excessive.

Magistrate Damian Carroll fined Maddern $1250 with no conviction recorded.
