Man's body found
THE body of a man who had been missing since Monday night was found in the Dawson River just after midnight yesterday.
The man had been trying to swim across the river with a friend when tragedy struck.
The body has been identified as the 43-year-old man from Cairns that emergency services were searching for, but police have not released his name.
Search and rescue co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Nick Paton said the man and a co-worker went for a drive on Monday but were unable to get back across the flooded bridge on their return.
The men had been at the Baralaba Golf Club and had tried to swim back in the fading light towards the lights of a local camping ground around 6pm.
The other man was rescued by a fisherman also staying at the camping ground. Police said there was no alcohol involved in the incident.
The RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service assisted with search efforts on Monday and Tuesday.
The man had been staying at Baralaba for the past few weeks while working at Woorabinda.
Police and emergency services searched the Dawson River and nearby land between the golf club and a northern weir for several days with no success. Police dive squads used sonar equipment to assist in the search.
