Man who sued Malcolm Roberts wants to rip up Coast council

A PROMINENT political blogger fresh from successfully suing One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts is trying to tear up the way the Coast currently elects its mayors and councillors.

Dicky Beach resident Tony Magrathea has filed a petition with the State Government, seeking the current system of separate wards, or divisions, be thrown out.

He described the current process as "archaic and anachronistic".

"It allows the richest, best funded candidate to dominate election in a small ward," his petition reads.

He requested the State Government change its electoral process for the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council election next year, creating one electorate for the entire region and 11 elected representatives.

Mr Magrathea also requested the elected councillors decide who is Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Noosa Council currently operates as an undivided council.

Voters currently get to cast a ballot for who they wish to represent them in their division, and a separate mayoral ballot.

Mr Magrathea said he thought it was a "better way" to go.

"It seems like if you're a millionaire you can buy yourself a ward," he said.

The pensioner said projects like the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion and Maroochydore CBD had further swayed him to lodge the petition.

"It (proportional representation) gives you the best person for the job, not the richest," he said.

"You might get ordinary people on council like they used to be.

"You're going to have them worry about everybody, instead of just their ward. I think it's a better way to go."

Mr Magrathea recently sued controversial Senator Roberts under an ancient concept dating back to the Middle Ages, over his dual citizenship eligibility issues.

The petition closes on September 16, and as of Tuesday evening, had only gathered four signatures in support.
