Man who killed mother, her cats appeals sentence

A NEWCASTLE man who killed his mother and her two cats in a drunken rage has been refused an appeal for a more lenient sentence.

Craig Daniel Catley had been hailed a hero before being sentenced to 12 years in jail.

A NSW Supreme Court jury found him guilty of manslaughter and animal cruelty on November 9, 2009.

Catley beat and stabbed his mother to death after a night of drinking in her Gateshead home on October 16, 2009.

He then slashed her two cats' throats with a knife.

Before the murder, Catley had become a minor celebrity after he entered floodwater to rescue a woman and her daughter trapped on the roof of their car during the storms that stranded the Pasha Bulker cargo ship in 2007.

Catley applied unsuccessfully to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal for a lesser sentence on the grounds the judge had not taken his mental illness into account.

He will be eligible for parole in nine years.
