Man tasered after tense stand-off in Drayton

A MAN was tasered by police in Drayton to bring an end to a tense stand-off that lasted for more than an hour.

Drayton police officer-in-charge Sergeant Jeremy Sheldrick said officers were called to a Drayton Rd home about 8.30pm Wednesday after receiving reports of a dispute between a Christopher Neale Roberts and his ex-partner.

Sgt Sheldrick said officers arrived to find an agitated Roberts who had a two-year-old boy with him.

Another child was also inside at the time.

Sgt Sheldrick said Roberts was not complying with police directions to let the boy go.

"He was obviously fairly aggressive when we first arrived on scene," Sgt Sheldrick said.

He was making demands from a bedroom for accommodation and food.

"We spoke to him for about an hour-and-a-half."

"We spoke to him and he agreed to release the child."

During the Roberts' court appearance yesterday afternoon, prosecutor Greg McIntyre said Roberts shaped up to fight police, saying he had trained in Muay Thai.

Mr McIntyre said he was warned to get on the ground before he was tasered.

Roberts was able to brush aside the taser shot before it was effective.

The court heard he then brandished a curtain rod at officers, swinging it like a baseball bat. Another officer then tasered him and he was arrested.

Defence solicitor Claire Graham said Roberts had not coped with the breakdown of his relationship with his ex-partner.

Magistrate Bruce Schemioneck noted he had recently been placed on parole for a previous breach of a court order.

Mr Schemioneck sentenced Roberts to six months in prison for the serious offences on Wednesday night as well as further four months for the prior offences for which he was on parole.

He set a parole eligibility date for June 20.
