Man tackled after allegedly fleeing store with tray of rings

A MAN who allegedly snatched a tray of engagement rings from a Gympie jewellery store this afternoon has been charged after the store owner and a courier driver tackled him as he fled.

A man entered the Mary Street business around 12.20pm where he asked to see a number of rings.

Police will allege he grabbed a tray of rings and fled down Mary Street. He travelled about 50 metres before a courier driver- stopped at a pedestrian crossing- realised what was happening and jumped out and grabbed the man.

The store owner- a 66-year-old man- chasing after the alleged thief, was bitten on the arm when he tried to help restrain the man.

Gympie detectives charged a 43-year-old Birkdale man with robbery with violence. He has been remanded in police custody and is due to appear in the Gympie Magistrates Court tomorrow.
