Police find stolen trailer buried in man's backyard

POLICE have unearthed a trailer mystery hidden in a Tara man's backyard.

Officers searched the home of Scott Andrew Cumner, 46, on August 2 last year and located a chain protruding from the ground.

An excavation of the area found a stolen trailer buried underneath.

The trailer was stolen from Ergon Energy in Tara on March 19, 2012.

Offenders broke into the business and took off with the trailer and electrical wiring.

During the search warrant at Cumner's property, police also located a small fuel tanker suspected of being stolen.

Cumner was arrested and charged on August 3.

Six days later, he was randomly intercepted driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

Cumner failed to report to the Tara police station to provide identification within seven days.

He pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property, unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and contravening a police direction at Dalby Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Laywer David Swanson said Cumner was not involved in the theft, but had agreed to bury the trailer on his property.

"My client received no benefit from the item at all," Mr Swanson said.

Mr Swanson said Cumner was prepared to immediately pay the $7000 restitution sought for the trailer.

"It's not been easy for him," he said.

Cumner was fined $750 for the traffic offences, and fined $1800 for the theft charges.

He was also ordered to pay $7000 to Ergon Energy.
