Man stabbed in lunchtime attack

A MAN was in surgery yesterday afternoon after being stabbed in the neck at Rockhampton's Riverside Park.

Regional Crime Inspector Jon Wacker said the man was taken to hospital after being stabbed during a dispute around 12.10pm.

The busy street filled with curious onlookers, including office workers on their lunchbreaks, as around 20 police and ambulance officers rushed to the scene.

Inspector Wacker said two men in their 40s were taken to hospital.

A 49-year-old woman was taken to hospital with a medical condition and was helping police with their investigations.

Gracemere's John Evans, was discharged yesterday after receiving treatment for wounds to the stomach.

Victor Matheson, who was sleeping on a bench nearby, awoke to see his friend Mr Evans fall over on to a bottle.

He said there was a group of about 15 people at the rotunda with some arguing about alcohol.

Another witness, who was taking a lunch break from his studies on Quay Street, said he heard an argument and saw a woman hit someone with a closed fist.

Inspector Wacker said the weapon used in the stabbing had not yet been recovered.

He said it was not clear what had started the dispute.
