'Marijuana safer than alcohol' shirt draws ire in court

A MAGISTRATE has ordered a man wearing a t-shirt printed with the words "Marijuana is safer than alcohol" to take off the garment while in court.

Steven John Campbell, 60, faced Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Thursday on two charges, one of possessing a dangerous drug and one of possessing drug utensils.

Magistrate Aaron Simpson told Mr Campbell, who was seated in the public gallery waiting for his matters to be heard, the shirt was a "political statement" and "not appropriate" in court.

Mr Campbell later apologised for wearing the shirt but said it was a "scientific fact" rather than a political statement. His case was adjourned and listed for a hearing in Bundaberg Magistrates Court in May.
