Man ‘not a Rebel’, still can’t get bail

A PACIFIC Paradise man has been remanded in custody under Queensland's new anti-crime laws, even though he argues the court has already proved he is "not a bikie".

Lorne James Campbell, 33, is charged with one count of possessing tainted cash and - as he is deemed a member of a declared criminal organisation, namely the Rebels Motorcycle Club - can apply for bail only in Brisbane Magistrates Court 20.

Mr Campbell, who represented himself in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday, said the Bail Act provisions should not apply to him.

"This court has already proven in the past that I'm not a bikie, so why am I now being treated like a bikie?" Mr Campbell asked Magistrate Barry Barrett.

Mr Campbell argued he had never breached bail conditions.

"I've never breached bail, I've always turned up to court, I've got a family to look after," he said.

He also suggested the time he would spend in custody awaiting a bail hearing would exceed the penalty for the alleged crime.

"Why should I be denied bail for something I won't even do time for?" he said.

The charge dates back to February 20 last year, at Annandale, near Townsville.

Mr Campbell pointed out that was well before the current anti-association laws were introduced.

Mr Campbell had been released on bail on October 29 last year for an unrelated matter, after Magistrate Bernadette Callaghan said she was not convinced he was a Rebels club member.

He will face a bail hearing in Brisbane on Friday.
