Man jailed for selling ecstasy at Mackay nightclubs

A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to three years jail for selling ecstasy pills to his friends and "randoms" he met at Mackay clubs at weekends.

Not long before his arrest, Zachary James Holmes had "bragged" to another person that he'd sold 140 pills in a period of five days.

In the Supreme Court in Mackay yesterday morning, Holmes pleaded guilty to trafficking drugs from July 5 to July 23 last year and to two counts of possessing drugs on July 22.

Crown prosecutor Samantha O'Rourke said police had raided Holmes' South Mackay home on July 22 last year. In his bedroom, officers had found a clip seal bag of methylamphetamine and a metal tin containing 12 ecstasy pills.

Ms O'Rourke said police also seized his mobile phone and found 134 drug-related text messages in "little over" a two-week period.

One text read, "Pretty stoked with myself. Turns out I sold 140 (pills) since Wednesday".

Ms O'Rourke told the court Holmes had admitted to police he had sold ecstasy pills to friends for $25 each and to "randoms" for $30 each at Mackay clubs at weekends.

She said on one occasion Holmes had sold methylamphetamine.

Defence barrister Stephen Byrne said Holmes had been unemployed since late 2014 and lived with his parents and sister.

He said Holmes had sold drugs to feed his own drug habit and that he was attending drug and alcohol counselling, but said he was not addicted to drugs.

Mr Byrne said Holmes' trafficking was street level and said he'd co-operated with police.

He tendered references from Holmes' mother and sister, who sat in the gallery.

Justice McMeekin said it appeared Holmes' family hadn't been aware of the trafficking.

He said the full extent of the business was unknown, but it appeared to be expanding at the time of Holmes' arrest.

Holmes' sentence will be suspended after four months in jail.
