Man coward punched officer during pub row

A POLICE officer has been seriously assaulted while responding to a disturbance in Gordonvale this evening.

At around 6pm, police were called to a hotel on Norman Street following reports of a disturbance between a number of men.

It will be alleged that one man walked towards a male officer and without warning punch him in the face.

It will be further alleged that when officers were arresting the man involved, two of the man's friends became involved in the incident, obstructing police in their arrest.

The male officer suffered a broken nose as a result of the incident and was treated at Cairns Base Hospital before being discharged.

A 23-year-old Gordonvale man has been charged with one count each of assault police, commit public nuisance and obstruct police.  He is expected to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court on June 15.

A 17-year-old man and 19-year-old man, both from Gordonvale were also charged with one count each of commit public nuisance.  They will both due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on June 30.
