Man charged over $8K ring theft, reportedly to propose

A MAN has been charged in Gladstone for stealing a diamond ring worth $8000 which he reportedly planned to use to propose to his girlfriend.

Gladstone's Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) Detective Sergeant Chris Lindsay told 7 News the man was shown the solitaire white gold ring at a Bundaberg Michael Hill jeweller store before he allegedly stole it.

CIB used CCTV to identify and track down the man, who Det Sgt Lindsay said was on a return-to-prison arrest warrant at the time of the alleged theft.

"The male person has links to Gladstone and Bundaberg so detectives from Bundaberg liaised closely with our office, and it resulted that we did a search warrant early this afternoon to locate the offender," Det Sgt Lindsay told 7 News.

Police also tracked down the partner of the man, who they said wasn't wearing the ring.

"(He) was in company with his girlfriend, and she was not in possession of the ring at the time," Det Sgt Lindsay said.

The man will appear in court next month.
