Man charged after allegedly grabbing young girl at shops

POLICE investigating an incident at a Cairns shopping centre yesterday morning in which a young girl was allegedly grabbed from behind have charged a man with indecent treatment of a child under 16.

A 14-year-old girl was shopping with family when she became momentarily separated from them at around 8.20am. It will be alleged that a man then grabbed the girl from behind, pulling her against him.

The girl struggled and screamed and was released with the man running off.

He was taken into custody by police a short time later at the McLeod Street shopping centre and has been remanded in custody to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
