Man accused of stabbing stepdad says he 'stuffed up'

A MAN accused of stabbing his stepfather in a frenzied attack last night had to be put in a padded watchhouse cell after he tried to strangle himself with his clothes.

Appearing via video link in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court this afternoon, a self-represented Yarran Paul James Minehan, 20, was denied bail, despite advice from Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin to wait for a lawyer to make his application.

Police allege Minehan stabbed his mother's boyfriend, 48, after an argument broke out at a Warran Rd, Yaroomba home about 9.50pm.

Officers found the victim collapsed on the ground with two wounds to his abdomen.

He was transferred to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition where he remains today, but the injuries have been deemed non life-threatening.

Minehan then allegedly went on to steal a car from an Amethyst Place home which was intercepted by police on David Low Way.

He is now facing single counts of unlawful wounding, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and enter premises and commit indictable offence.

The court heard Minehan - who is currently on parole and serving a suspended sentence - admitted the crimes to police.

A mental health assessment was done on Minehan while he was in the watchhouse, which concluded he was not psychologically unsound or drug affected, he was simply being difficult.

During his bail application, Minehan said he "stuffed up really badly" and that his mum and her boyfriend meant "a lot" to him.

"I just need to get on a better path," he said.

"I just want one last chance".

Mr McLaughlin denied Minehan bail as he believed he was "a dangerous person" and likely to spend "significant time in actual jail".

Minehan will appear in court again on March 9 for a committal mention.
