Mall fire paints Brisbane city's sky black
A fire in a cooling tower added some drama to the lunchtime rush in Brisbane city on Wednesday.
Nine fire crews responded to numerous Triple Zero calls around 12.45pm, after thick smoke was seen rising from the Broadway on the Mall building, currently undergoing renovations.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services acting inspector Glen Arnold said the blaze was in an air conditioning tower on the roof.
"[It was] quickly extinguished, but [generated] lots of smoke, which sent a lot of people into panic mode," he said.
"The only people occupying the building at the time of the fire were contractors undertaking work, and they had already evacuated prior to our arrival."
