Malaysian Airlines flight lands safely after forced turnback

A MALAYSIAN airlines plane with 166 people and seven crew aboard landed safely today after being forced to turn back to Kuala Lumpur due to a landing gear problem.

The airline said in a statement on its Facebook page the aircraft's right-hand landing gear malfunctioned on take-off and the crew made the decision to turn back to Kuala Lumpur.

It said flight 192 had departed from Kuala Lumpur at 10.09pm on Sunday bound for Bangalore, India.

The near miss comes on the back of flight 370 which disappeared on March 8 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing after it is believed to have diverted and crashed into the Indian Ocean killing all 239 passengers and crew aboard.

The international search to recover or locate anything from the airliner has reached a critical stage after "pings" believed to be from the plane's black box stopped transmitting about a week ago.

Authorities involved in the search have told Fairfax Media the best hope to solve what has become one of history's most baffling aviation mysteries is the US Navy underwater drone, the Bluefin-21, which is being launched from the Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield.

It was reported at the weekend the Malaysian Government was preparing to issue death certificates to relatives for those passengers and crew who were aboard the plane.
