Make each day a holiday without leaving our region

DON'T wait for holidays … enjoy local life. I have found a new way to spend the little amount of "me time" I get: body boarding.

Yes, those who know me will be having a giggle at this, but I find myself kicking the kids off their body boards so that I can enjoy the waves of Tannum beach.

At one stage, I even asked my daughter for "one more turn" while she unwillingly sat with her little brother on the beach.

I can't believe that after living here for almost 15 years, I have only just realised how great our local beach really is.

I would occasionally go down for a quick swim, but over the past few weeks I have been heading down almost daily to ride the waves.

This got me thinking how much we take for granted as locals ... our beautiful beaches, fantastic community events, great local restaurants and shopping outlets.

So last weekend after my refreshing swim at the beach, although disappointed there were no waves for body boarding, I took the kids down to BAM, then stopped in to try the new Indian takeout at Tannum Sands and it really felt like we were on holidays.

No longer am I going to wait for those few precious weeks of holidays to enjoy the beach, markets, shopping and eating out.

I can enjoy all of these things right here, every weekend, while supporting our local businesses and community groups.

And if anyone else is looking to do the same, I suggest you like the Gladstone Chamber of Commerce and Industry Facebook group, and become a Buy Local Champion.

There are monthly prizes up for grabs just for telling us about your Buy Local story.

As soon as I finish this column, I'm heading off to Agnes to try my new "talent" on some big waves.
