Major renovation hard going but end result worth it
IT was a testing 12-month renovation venture, but the rewards of Kenny and Carly Urquhart's project are as obvious as their Gladstone home's stylish, modern design.
Since moving to Gladstone two years ago, Kenny has not only started a successful business, Big Boys Fencing, but also purchased a typical Gladstone house and turned it into a contemporary, fashionable home.
Kenny said he originally purchased his house because rent was too expensive.
"It was cheaper to buy," he explained.
Although members of his staff were also living in the house, Kenny decided to get to work on much-needed renovations.
"I probably spent $140,000 on it," he said.
Kenny said he not only re-landscaped but put in a new driveway, new roof, windows and added two new bathrooms and built-in downstairs.
Other renovations included re-painting, plastering, plumbing, air-conditioning and new lights and fittings.
Many of the supplies used for the massive project were purchased in town from CQ Frames and Trusses and Bunnings.
With the help of his staff and local businesses, Kenny was able to complete the project, but he admits it was difficult.
When asked what was most challenging, Kenny said: "All of it.
"I guess because we had no loan to do it all at once and because we lived there during it.
"If we had a loan to do it all at once it would have been better."
Kenny said at one point 11 boys were living in the house whilst the project was in mid-works.
"I'll never do it again," he said. "I would do another reno again, but when you have to live in it and renovate whilst 11 boys are living in it - it was just a nightmare."
The sleek, casually designed front deck offers a positive street appeal to the home and Kenny agrees it is the best feature.
After completing the project, the tradie advised others to be prepared and get the money for your renovations first.
"Know what you're going to do before you do it. We changed our mind about everything."
But the efforts were certainly worthwhile. Kenny said he loved the fact there was now plenty of spare space in the house.
"There are currently six people living in the house and everyone has their own space."
The newly renovated home on Herbertson St, Gladstone is up for sale, listed with selling agents Savvy Business.
