Maguire hits out at Inglis charge

SOUTH Sydney coach Michael Maguire has slammed the grade four dangerous contact charge handed to his star fullback Greg Inglis for a shoulder charge on Dragons utility Dean Young that could see Inglis sidelined for four matches.

Maguire yesterday accused the NRL Match Review Committee of being influenced by comments made by Dragons coach Steve Price after the match at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

"He (Price) came out and compared this tackle to one where his player was charged earlier in the year, where he raised his elbow and struck an opposition player square in the face," Maguire said.

"To compare these two incidents is ridiculous to say the least, and to do so can only be designed to be inflammatory and to try and prejudice the case before it reaches the match review committee.

"It is against the NRL Rules to comment on any matter that is subject to review by the Match Review Committee ... his comments have exacerbated this situation, and if this isn't a clear case of trying to prejudice a case against a player then I don't know what is."

Inglis faces four weeks on the sidelines if he makes an early guilty plea, and an extra week if he appeals the decision and loses.

The Broncos face the prospect of losing two players after back-rower Ben Te'o was given a grade two careless high tackle charge for a hit on Titans forward Luke Bailey, and fullback Josh Hoffman was given a grade two dangerous contact charge for his hit on Bailey.

Both Brisbane players would miss one week with early guilty pleas.
