Accused murderer charged, bail application not made

TUESDAY 10am:

THE man accused of murder faced the Mackay Magistrates Court this morning charged with the murder of Gregory John Cash.

Leslie James Walker is charged with one count of murder after an alleged incident in West Mackay on Saturday night.

The 53-year-old appeared in the courtroom dock wearing prison-issued clothing and with a bandaged left hand.

Magistrate Damien Dwyer adjourned the matter to later this month.

No bail application was made because Mr Dwyer said he didn't have the authority to grant bail.

The court was told Walker had made an application for legal aid.

 

TUESDAY 7am:

POLICE have charged a man with murder following the stabbing-death of another man in West Mackay.

About 8.15pm on Saturday police were called to a unit complex on Nebo Rd after an altercation between two men, who were known to each other.

It is believed a knife was produced during the altercation.

A 49-year-old man was rushed to Mackay Base Hospital with life-threatening injuries, but died early Sunday morning.

A 53-year-old man was questioned by police and charged with murder about 4pm yesterday.

He will appear in the Mackay Magistrates Court this morning.

MONDAY 6.30am:

POLICE were questioning a 53-year-old Mackay man yesterday following the death of another man in an alleged stabbing.

The 49-year-old man who was stabbed was taken to Mackay Base Hospital by ambulance for treatment for life-threatening injuries after an alleged altercation involving two men on Saturday night, a Queensland Police Media spokesman said.

However, he died as a result of his injuries early yesterday morning.

The incident occurred in a unit complex on Nebo Rd.

Mackay scenes of crime detectives were investigating at the Nebo Rd unit complex yesterday.

"Investigations to date indicate that around 8.15pm an altercation involving two men began, during which a knife is believed to have been produced," the police media spokesman said.

The 53-year-old man sustained non-life threatening injuries during the incident, but the spokesman did not comment on the nature of his injuries.

It is not known if the two men were known to each other or to police.

Police officers were still at the residential complex late yesterday.

No charges had been laid last night.

SUNDAY 9.55am:

A 53-year-old West Mackay man is assisting police with inquiries following a fatal stabbing last night in West Mackay.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that shortly after 8pm an altercation involving two men began.

It was then that police believe a knife was produced.

"As a result, a 49-year-old Mackay man sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to the Mackay Base Hospital for treatment," a police spokesperson said.  "He, however, died as a result of his injuries early this morning.

"The 53-year-old man sustained non-life threatening injuries. Investigations are continuing and there is no further information available at this stage."
