Mackay man banned from Gladstone's Port Curtis Hotel

MICHEAL Kuchtin, 29, will pay a lot more in fines than the price of a few borrowed cigarettes after he reacted badly when a fellow pub patron took some of his smokes without permission at a Gladstone pub earlier this year.

Kuchtin pleaded guilty in Mackay Magistrates Court yesterday to one charge of assault or obstruct a police office, breaching a probation order and one charge of failing to leave licensed premises.

Prosecutor Acting Senior Constable Alicia Ozolins told the court Kuchtin had refused to leave the hotel and resisted police arrest.

Defence solicitor Vince Campbell said the incident happened in the hotel's smoking area after a female patron took some of Kuchtin's cigarettes from his open pack.

Magistrate Ross Risson fined Kuchtin $1000 and banned him from the Port Curtis Hotel for six months.
