Rescued pup wins hearts at girls' school

IPSWICH Girls' Grammar School has a new boarder - and the four-legged friend is fast becoming the school's most popular lodger.

Lunar, a kelpie pup, has arrived at the IGGS boarding house with 15-year-old student Maddi Ford for the beginning of the school year.

Maddi came across Lunar while working in a vet as a nurse's assistant over the school holidays.

Lunar was on the verge of being euthanised when Maddi volunteered to care for the pup.

She asked IGGS head of boarding Carole Ward if Lunar could join her at the school.

"When I found out she was going to be euthanised I was like, 'oh no', but we didn't let it happen," Maddi said.

"She was in the vet for a week and I would walk her every day and try to train her and I fell in love with her."

Now the boarders couldn't imagine life with Lunar.

"The other girls love her and they think it's really great. She is really therapeutic. When some of the younger girls are missing home, it's really good to have Lunar around."

Ms Ward said it didn't take long for Lunar to win the hearts of all the girls. And there has been no shortage of volunteers wanting to take Lunar home during the holidays.

"When Lunar's plight became known, we decided it was a good opportunity to rescue a pet for the girls, and what a great decision," she said.

"She has certainly been a big hit with the boarder girls and the wider community with visitors popping in all day to see her.

"She has also helped homesick or unhappy girls relax and settle in to boarding and school life."

Maddi hopes her love of animals may lead to a career as a vet.

"I have wanted to be a vet since I was really little and I have been looking to people like Dr Harry," she said.
